Methodology

Lads to Leaders & Leaderettes has a proven methodology for developing young people into leaders. Our programs include peer leadership training, mentoring programs, annual leadership camps, national workshops, college scholarships, special awards and honors, a national leadership team, and the annual convention. Each program is well documented, providing comprehensive written guidance and quantitative progress measurement tools to both mentors and students.

We're Losing HALF???!!!

One Christian University Survey found that only half of the youths in Churches of Christ remain faithful after high school graduation! Good news: many congregations with Lads to Leaders & Leaderettes have a 92 - 100% youth retention rate!

FOUR STEPS START LEADERS

The four principles of leadership development that form the basis of instruction

Volunteer Spirit:
Students lead by stepping out first

100% Cooperation:
Students lead by learning how to work with others

Worthy Goals:
Students lead by knowing what their purpose is and what steps are necessary to fulfill them

Self-Starter:
Students lead by being internally motivated

Motto

The Lads to Leaders & Leaderettes motto is:

No person will be expected to do tasks without first being provided proper preparation and assistance.

This principle provides successful leadership training in several ways. First, it assures the building of self-esteem. Students are equipped for the task at hand. This process of training or equipping builds confidence and helps the student believe that "I can!" Secondly, it insists that a student accept the responsibility of the preparation for a task. It is not only important that the teacher equip but also important that the student accept that training through hard work and persistence. Proper preparation produces successful endeavors. Repeated successes produce self-esteem. Confident, well-equipped young men and women are leaders.

Character Development

At the heart of the Lads to Leaders & Leaderettes program are the ten pledges worded and refined through the years by Dr. Zorn. Each pledge speaks to a character trait needed by a leader -- accountability, attitude, responsibility, integrity, respect for authority, self-respect, and servanthood.

Ten Leader Pledges

  1. I am answerable to God and to society. (Matthew 22:21)
  2. I will overcome pessimism and live a life of faith in God. (Philippians 4:13)
  3. I am fully responsible for my behavior. (Romans 14:12)
  4. I am responsible for my agreements and obligations. (Matthew 7:12)
  5. I pursue honest work to meet my responsibilities. (I Timothy 5:8)
  6. I honor and obey my parents and respect persons in authority. (Ephesians 6:2)
  7. I respect my body as the creation of God and use it for His glory. (I Corinthians 6:20)
  8. I choose for my friends those who enjoy doing good. (I Corinthians 15:33)
  9. I lead in building character and in demonstrating integrity. (Philippians 2:22)
  10. I lead in second-mile service to others. (Matthew 5:41)

-- Dr. Jack Zorn

That each of these pledges acknowledges a positive character trait is no accident. As Emerson said, "Character is higher than intellect -- a great soul will be strong to live as well as to think."

"It is not money, nor is it mere intellect, that governs the world; it is moral character, and intellect associated with moral excellence," according to T.D. Woolsey.

In the Bible, a phenomenally greater amount of information is given in the Bible on character development than is given on our Sunday worship. This is with just cause -- for if our character is poor, our worship will also be poor. If our character is worthy, then our worship will also be worthy.

This is not to mean that we must try to "earn our way to heaven," but that our constant aim must be to become more Christ-like. And as we do so, we will by the virtue of our character lead others to Christ also.

Growth Areas

A significant part of leadership training is the ability to set goals, develop a plan of attainment and work the plan. To encourage the development of this skill, a point system, entitled 125+ Things to Do, focuses on five areas of growth: Knowledge, Service, Communication, Responsibility, and Leadership.

These five areas of growth are designed with flexibility to meet the needs of the one-talent or five-talent student. Remember -- every student needs an appropriate challenge and a track to run on toward a worthy goal. The intent of this program is to develop well-rounded leaders. Students who pursue the completion of goals in each of the five areas will know that quality of balance.
